The events of the past few days have been weighing heavy on my heart. I have been praying so hard for the right words to say. So many people have been focusing on the word “hate”, but I want to take a minute to focus on the word “love” instead.

Jesus said in Luke 6:27-28 “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”

He did not say:

Love your enemies…UNLESS you disagree.

Love your enemies…UNLESS they make you angry.

Love your enemies…UNLESS they are different from you.

NO. There is no condition on Jesus’ command. How is this possible? Loving your enemies does not mean that you agree with all of their choices. Loving your enemies does not mean that you encourage their wrong behavior. Loving your enemies does not mean that you become best friends.

What it does mean is that despite how much they hurt you, you still pray for the salvation of their souls. You pray that they can be reached by the Holy Spirit, and you pray for a change in heart.

When asked what is the greatest commandment of all, Jesus answered this, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39

Love God. Love your neighbor. Love your enemy.

Sadly, I feel that many Christians have lost sight of these core principles of our faith. They have fallen victim to the lies and hatred that are sown in this world by our own sinful nature and by Satan.

I am reminded of the phrase, “What would Jesus Do?” Let those words sink in for a minute. Would Jesus mock and laugh at the death of an enemy? Would Jesus spread hatred? I think you know the answer.

This is my prayer today. I pray that all people, especially my fellow Christians may remember these words of Jesus. May we all stand up for what we know in our hearts is right. May we all put the hatred aside and for once just show love and respect for one another. May we all take a little less time scrolling through the Internet and a little more time reading our Bibles. I pray for healing. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.
